In this series of termly half day workshops we will look at a range of art materials exploring their properties and the effects you can acheive when applying them in different ways. Through each term we will work from a range of stiumuli, the aim being to broaden the student understanding of how a specific medium can be used. Activities will investigate both loose approaches and more controlled application to build a broad knowledge of the varied outcomes that can be achieved with each set of materials explored. Suitable for all abilities.

Autumn Topic: Inks
We will be exploring a variety of approaches to the use of pens, and acrylic ink, from the control seen in the work of artists such as Arthur Rackham and Stella Ross-Craig to the looser approach of Ann Blockley and Sarah Simblet. The activities will break down approaches to use of ink so that students gain an understanding of:
– The range of marks that can be achieved using pens and a range of mark making implements.
– The way marks can be applied both in a fluid and more controlled manner.
– The way tonal washes can be applied in monochrome to add form and depth to an image.
– The way looser and controlled marks can be combined to draw focus to specific parts of a composition.
– The way textural effects can be created.
